The Bryan County High Lady 'Skins softball team boarded a bus for the short haul up I-16 to Savannah Christian on Aug. 26 for a region clash against the No. 2  ranked Lady Raiders of Class 3A.
The No. 9 ranked Lady Redskins were ready to get a win and move their way up in the state polls, but Mother Nature decided that she would hold the spotlight on that day as torrential rains postponed this highly anticipated region matchup that will be rescheduled.
On Aug. 27 the Lady 'Skins traveled to Warner-Robins for the International City Brawl, a weekend of competitive softball that would test their 9-0 record.  The Resdskins found themselves on the field with some of the best in Georgia and gained some valuable upper-level experience.
Up first was First Presbyterian Day (9-2-2), which dealt BCHS a 6-2 opening game loss.  The following game was against reigning state champs Columbus (11-2-1) and the Lady 'Skins hung tough leading 6-5 in the 3rd inning before stretching out a 10-5 win over Bryan County.
After this game Coach Al Butler had these comments:
"We are still not executing our hit and runs and bunts on the first attempt..  It seemed like our girls tried to play a different style of softball when we first got there.  It took a few innings before we slowed down and hit our rhythm."
Host Houston County (10-3) was next on the schedule and once again the Lady 'Skins took a loss as they continued to have trouble getting down their bunts and lost a close one 3-2.
The lone win of the weekend for Bryan County came on Saturday morning as the girls continued to play sub-par ball but came away with a 6-0 win against Veteran's High (10-3) .
The remaining games were rained out and the Redskins headed home.
"We have a lot to work on with 90 percent of it being emotional and mental and the other 10 percent being bunting. Overall, we were not intimidated and the girls came from behind at times and continued to fight in each game," said Butler.
Bryan County traveled to Calvary on Thursday for a region game and will host Metter in a 4 p.m. contest on Sept. 9 in Pembroke.
FOOTBALL
The Friday Night lights season got kicked off on Aug. 27 when the 'Boys of Fall' from Bryan County High made the long haul to Long County to take on the Blue Tide in a non-region opener.
The young and fairly inexperienced Bryan County squad held their own for most of the night before coming home with a 20-7 loss at the hands of the successful air attack of Long County.
Bryan County shut down the running game of Long County and held the Blue Tide to -15 yards rushing on the night, but the air attack of Long County would not be denied. The Blue Tide scored three touchdowns through the air, two of those being over 40 yards, and ended the night with 203 passing yards.
Bryan County quarterback Albert Chavis scored the lone touchdown for the Redskins and finished the night with 60 yards rushing.
First year coach Mark Wilson shed some insight on his teams' play.
"The kids played hard, we just didn't make enough plays to win the game. We had one or two players making mistakes on several plays such as blocking the wrong person and such, but we didn't turn the ball over and that was good. We are a young team and they took advantage of our young, inexperienced corners and burnt us on some long passes. Our defense played pretty good other than that and we were still in the game with only five or six minutes left to play.  We are a young team and we are going to go through some growing pains."
Up next for Bryan County is a home game against a big and fast Jenkins County team that will come to Pembroke on Friday night, September 3 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Anyone traveling by Bryan County High after school in the afternoons will probably wonder what the herd of students lingering near the student parking lot are up to, but there is no reason to be alarmed, because the large group is simply the Bryan County cross-country team awaiting instructions from their coach, Cindy Bennett.
Though the cross-country season will not be off and running until Thursday, Sept. 9, the 35 boys and 20 or so girls that have come out for the 2010 cross-country season is exciting in itself.
"We have five returning seniors on the boys squad this year and they are really stepping up and leading the way already," Bennett said.
The squad is continuing to work hard to get in better physical condition as the upcoming season approaches and below is the 2010 cross-country slate.
