The high expectations for the 2010 'Lady Skins softball team of Bryan County High are right on track as the fastpitch girls have jumpemaded out to a 4-0 record to put their State Championship dreams in motion. Bryan County made quick work of visiting Ware County (2A-AAAA) on Wednesday, Aug. 11 with a 7-1 season opening win behind the pitching of Tiffany Howard and Makayla Peny, who combined for a no-hit performance in the 7-1 victory. Jerri Hines starred offensivbely for Bryan County with her 5th inning solo homerun and teammate Rebecca Strickland provided some timely hitting in the opening win. " I was pleased to start the season out with a homerun. It was a good pitch to hit and I was able to capitalize on it with a solid hit," said Hines.
With a season opening win under their belt the 'Lady Skins hit the road for the weekend with a trip to Waycross for the "Softball in the Swamp" tourney. Bryan County kept the winning wheels rolling as they went 3 for 3 in the win column as they picked up wins against Glynn Academy (2A-AAAA) at 5-4 when Bridget Bacon ripped a last inning 2-run triple to catapult the Redskins to victory after trailing the entire game.. Lanier County (2A-A) was the next team to fall as Bryan County breezed to a 11-4 win as several Lady 'Skins saw game action. Makayla Peny went the distance on the mound.
On Saturday, the Lady'Skins donned clean uniforms and a fresh breath as they faced a (3A-AAAAA) Camden County squad. With a solid Tiffany Howard back on the mound, Bryan County took a 5-0 lead into the last inning before the Camden girls scored three runs and had the bases loaded before Howard finished the deal with a game total of 10 strikeouts and held on for a 5-3 win. Sierra Newman went 2-3 at the plate and Bridget Bacon was 1-2 with 3 RBI's. Inclement weather cancelled the remainder of the tourney and arrangements for rescheduling are being made.
Coach Al Butler summarized his observations, "Overall, I am proud of the girls. We have used these first few games to get a lot of players into the game. There were several times during the week that we were in a tight spot and the girls held on. We just need to get our timing down and get into a consistent routine, both on and off the field. I feel that once we as a team start to click that we can duplicate or surpass last year's success."
Bryan County heads into Region action as they hosted Calvary on Tuesday, Aug. 17 and travel to Metter on Thursday, Aug. 19 for more region play. Updates of these games will appear in future issue. Info on Bryan County High sports can be sent to Tim Traywick at
