Every football player needs strength and speed to be successful. Richmond Hill head football coach Lyman Guy is making sure his players get plenty of opportunities for both during the summer.
The Wildcats finished the end of school with over 100 players going through spring practice.
Guy said the Wildcats have been averaging about 70 players since they began summer workouts on May 24.
“I’ve been pleased with the turnout we have had but I am also looking for more players to come out,” Guy said.
Richmond Hill splits the workout between building strength in the weight room and making players faster through a variety of running and agility exercises.
“We need to improve on every aspect of the game and change the entire culture,” Guy said.
One way that the Wildcats are being able to improve their speed is through the use of a machine called Speedtraxx. Speedtraxx is a metal box that has resistance bands hooked to it that can accommodate several players doing a variety of activity.
“We are just now teaching players how to use it and get them used to it,” AD/Assistant Coach Michael Pollard.
The system also had a side piece that allows players to work on their vertical jumps with resistance bands.
The exercises players go through relate specifically to skills they will use on the football field.
Coach Guy explained to a linebacker that as he worked through the speed drills he should be employing position specific techniques.
“We have accomplished a great deal but we need to keep working to get better,” Guy stated.
Richmond Hill has workouts Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 5-6:30 p.m. each week. There will not be any workouts from July 4-10 because of the GHSA Dead Week. Tuesday skill players work from 6:30-7:30 pm. The Wildcats host a passing league at the sprint turf fields at Devaul Henderson Park beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Richmond Hill will also host three camps in July. Wofford College Camp July 13 and 14. Session I 1-3 p.m., Session II 5-7 p.m. July 13. Session III 9-11 a.m. July 14. $50.  Valdosta State University Camp July 20, 9-11 a.m., $40.  Savannah State University Camp July 27, 9-11 a.m., $40. Price to attend all camps combined is $125.
