The 2010 high school football season is still months away, but on Monday, May 3 the practice field at Bryan County High was the welcome mat for 63 anxious guys hoping to make this year’s squad.
New coach Mark Wilson and his staff took advantage of two weeks of Spring football practice that ended May 13. “In spring practice we just wanted to get our players acquainted with the fundamentals of football, and we still have a long way to go with that, but the kids have been working hard and have a good attitude and that’s a good thing. We had approximately 63 guys come out for spring practice and we focused mainly on getting them together and working on teamwork while going over fundamentals,” he said.
As with any new coach at any high school, there are questions waiting to be answered as fans, players and parents get used to a new coach and new system. If the spirited practices and enthusiasm echoing from the Bryan County practice field from players and coaching staff are any indication of things to come, then the winds of change are blowing in the right direction. Wilson knows that there is only so much you can do in the two weeks of spring practice and he seemed pleased with what was accomplished by his young squad. “As far as progress made goes, just to be able to come out here and run a few plays after about the first six days is good. We really just wanted to get them accustomed to each other and familiar with our system.”
Bryan County will showcase a new spread attack this year.
“We hope to spread it out some and get the ball to as many guys as we can," Wilson said. "We have some young guys that can run and we are going to try and get them into the open field with the ball. We do plan to run the football, but we want to spread em out while doing that. We have thrown a lot of the offense at these kids and they are picking up on it pretty well.”
Defensively, the Redskins will try to rely on speed.
“We are not real big so we will be moving around to offset our size," Wilson said. "We are going to get into the weight room over the summer and push the weightlifting program and try and gain some strength so we can catch up some in that area.”
There was no spring game.
