The Richmond Hill High School Lady Wildcats face Creekview in the quarterfinals of the state Class AAA soccer tournament tonight at Richmond Hill.
The match, a battle of top 10 teams, gets under way at 6:30 p.m. And it's a rematch.
"Creekview is the team we lost to in the quarterfinals last year," said RHHS coach Steve Kollman. "They are ranked No. 3 and we are No. 10. We expect them to be better than they were last year because they returned all their players. They will be physical, fast paced team that won't give away any space for our girls to operate."
Finding room to operate hasn't been a problem for the Lady Wildcats so far. The RHHS girls have outscored their first two state opponents 18-0.
Troup County was the Lady Wildcats' first victim, falling to RHHS 10-0 on April 30. Wednesday, the Richmond Hill High School girls kept up their torrid pace, blistering Eagles Landing 8-0. Lindsay Vasher and Sarah Goolsby each had four goals and two assists, and Morgan Cribbs had an assist.
Goalkeepers Gaby Parker and Lauren Chesney each recorded a pair of saves for RHHS, which improved the team to 16-3 overall.
"The Eagles Landing game was a good game for us because they were a quality midfield that knew what to do with the ball against the defense that they saw," Kollman said. "We also got to play a lot of players due to the heat. Our girls were able to overcome the heat, and take advantage of the opportunities that Eagles Landing gave us."
Kollman hopes that level of play continues today, but Creekside (16-2) will again be a challenge. The Lady Grizzlies advanced by beating No. 2 ranked John's Creek 5-1.
"Our girls will have to come mentally prepared to play the whole 80 minutes," Kollman said. "If they do, we can compete at the highest level."
In the boys contest, RHHS fell 3-1 to No. 8 Perry on Tuesday in the second round of the Class AAA boys tournament. Melvin Neely score a goal off Jay Sipe's assist to account for the Wildcats offense.
Coach Robbie Flanders said match was a tough one from start to finish. "I'm proud of my guys for never giving up on the game, even being down late in the game."
The Wildcats finished the season 12-6.
