Richmond Hill’s Lady Wildcat basketball team won two of three games in the Region 3-AAA tournament, including a 56-54 win over rival Liberty County in the tournament’s consolation game on Saturday in West Laurens.
By virtue of that win they advance as the No. 3 seed from the region to the state tourney. Richmond Hill (18-9, 9-5) will face the region 2-AAA No. 2 seed Northside Columbus (19-5, 9-3) on Saturday in Columbus.
In what head coach Elizabeth Bennett described as a "true team effort," Richmond Hill outlasted the two fatigued teams by virtue of getting four players in double figures for the night.
"Liberty is a great team," Bennett said. "With both teams being fatigued, anything was bound to happen. I was proud of all the players who stepped up."
Tyler Carlson, Aliyah Johnson and Dajah Davis led with 11 points each while Kourtney Myers contributed nine.
In the boys bracket, West Laurens edged the Wildcats 70-68 in overtime. While Richmond Hill did not meet their goal head coach William Altman was proud of the effort.
"They played extremely hard and put up a fight," exclaimed Altman. "West Laurens clearly had the home court advantage."
