The state wrestling tournament took place Feb. 17-20. Three Richmond Hill High School wrestlers saw some success at the event, which took place in Atlanta.

Senior Zach Sheffield (125 pounds) made it to the semifinals in the while Michael Early (145 pounds) made it to the quarterfinals. Heavyweight Josh Bryant won his first round match.

Wrestling season is now officially over, and RHHS Coach Adam Moret said he is pleased overall with the success of his team this year.

In the 125-pound division, Sheffield defeated wrestlers from Perry High School and Woodward Academy before getting disqualified against a wrestler from Carrollton High School.

In the 145-pound division, Early defeated wrestlers from Dunwoody High and Elbert County High, but lost to wrestlers from Heritage High and Ringgold High.

In the heavyweight division, Bryant defeated a wrestler from Crisp County High, but lost to wrestlers from Shaw High and Carrollton High.

At the conclusion of regular season, Sheffield (21-0), Early (14-3) and Bryant (15-1) each won Region 3-AAA titles for their respective weight classes.

The Mat Cats finished the regular season with 10 wins and four losses. Moret is optimistic about next season, which will include Early and Bryant.

"I hope the young guys who came out will return next season and hopefully all will go to a camp over the summer," Moret said.
