The wrestling state sectionals, which were supposed to have taken place over the weekend in the Atlanta area, were cancelled due to the winter storm advisory. As a result, all the RHHS wrestlers are now headed to the state tournament, which begins tomorrow in Atlanta.
The state tournament was to include the 16 best teams in the state. With the sectionals out of the picture, the state tourney will now be the top 32 teams in the state competing. The action begins Thursday morning and concludes Saturday.
"It’s going to be chaotic," RHHS Coach Adam Moret said. "You’re looking at four classes and 2,000 wrestlers all in the same place.
The stakes are tougher than if there had been a sectional tourney. One first round loss equals elimination.
"It all depends on the draw," Moret said. "If you’re up against a state champion in the first round, your chances are dim."
Moret has high hopes for 125-pounder Zach Sheffield (21-0), 145-pounder Michael Early (14-3) and heavyweight Josh Bryant (15-1).
Zach Sheffield (21-0) maintained his undefeated streak in the 125 pound category to win the Region 3-AAA title for the second straight year. Also crowned region champions were Michael Early (145 pound, 14-3 record) and Josh Bryant (285 pounds/heavyweight, 15-1 record). He is hoping for others on the team to fare well also, but said the competition will be very tough.
