The Bryan County High basketball teams took a short trip into Savannah Friday night, Jan. 29 for a region clash against the Hornets of Savannah Country Day. The Lady 'Skins kept their region playoff hopes alive as they came back to Pembroke with a 39-24 win.
"I was proud of our defensive effort in the second half as we were able to hold Country Day to zero points during the third quarter and continued to play hard in the fourth quarter to get the win,” BCHS Coach Mario Mincey said. “More importantly it was a region win and the win got us closer to our goal of making it to the region playoffs.”
Leading the way for Bryan County was Olivia Melvin with 12 points.
The Redskin boys didn't fare as well in the evening tilt as they fell prey to the Hornets at a score of 58-46 and saw their hopes of reaching the region playoffs vanish.
“We are out of the playoffs, therefore we are setting our sites on trying to win 10 games this year, which would double our win total from last year,” BCHS Coach Allen Clark said.
On Friday, Jan. 22 the BCHS basketball teams traveled to Jenkins County High for a region tilt. The Lady Skins’ picked up a rare loss at the hands of the Lady Eagles with a score of 54-50 while the boys got a 56-46 win and their first region win of the season.
“We didn’t do a good job of rebounding and our free throw shooting really hurt us, but we have to put that behind us and focus on our upcoming games against Claxton and Savannah Country Day,” Lady ‘Skin Coach Mario Mincey said.
Olivia Melvin dumped in 27 points to lead the scoring. Satashala Beasley finished with 10 points.
The Bryan County boys took the court in a later tipoff and picked up a 56-46 region win.
“It was a very exuberant locker room after the game,” Redskin Coach Allen Clarke said. “I was excited to see that because we had not yet shown real emotion after a win. It was a packed gym at Jenkins and their fans were very intimidating and loud. I was proud of the way our team responded. We got down 16-5 in the first quarter and to come back and win was great. We needed a win like this to get some confidence going down the home stretch.”
Winston Johnson led Bryan County with 19 points while Willie Deloach followed closely with 18 points.
The Claxton Tigers visited Pembroke on Tuesday, Jan. 26 for another region matchup and the fans saw the ‘Lady Skins’ get back on the winning track with a 39-24 win.
“I was happy to get back to our winning ways and get another region win, but I really think we could have played better,” Redskin Coach Mario Mincey said. “We need to do a better job of free throw shooting. If we can pick up a few more region wins, we should make the region playoffs.”
Beasley led the scoring with 17 points for Bryan County.
The Bryan County boys could not keep the winning momentum going in the night cap game as they fell prey to the Tigers 55-42. Chris Bellamy led the Claxton team with 12 points as teammate D.J. Jenkins followed with 10 points. Johnson scored 11 points for the losing Redskins while Deloach added 10 in the losing effort.
The Lady Redskins are currently 15-4 and 6-3 for Region 3A. The boys are now 7-12 and 1-8 for Region 3A.
