The Bryan County High Redskins (1-9, 1-4) traveled to Mount Vernon on Nov. 6, hoping to pick up another football victory in the last pigskin tilt of the year. The ‘Skins traveled to take on the Montgomery County Eagles (4-6, 2-4) from Region 3B-A.
The Redskins, who upset the Savannah Country Day Hornets the week before for their first win, were hoping to finish out the season on a winning note but came up on the short end of the stick as they fell to the Eagles 13-6.
This low scoring contest was intertwined with penalties (21) and fumbles (6) from both squads, but the balanced offensive attack of Montgomery County edged out the predominant rushing attack of Bryan County. Montgomery County put scores on the board in the first quarter on a one yard run, with their final score coming in the fourth quarter from 2 yards out. Bryan County’s lone score came in the third quarter when Joseph Jenkins hit pay dirt on a 40 yard touchdown scamper.
Montgomery County finished the night with 157 rushing yards and added 117 through the air. Bryan County, who relies heavily upon their rushing attack for their offensive strength, ended with 150 yards on the ground and 17 from the passing game. Jenkins had 6 carries for 57 yards and sophomore Alex Cruz carried the ball 22 times for 57 yards. The Bryan County defense was led by Cameron Lee (7 tackles) and Jenkins (5 tackles).
Football season is now over for Bryan County High School. Although they only garnered one win this season, the young Redskin squad has gained praise from their head coach Ron Lewis week end and week out for their valiant effort.
"These guys have come out week after week and worked hard in practice and gave it their all in the games," Lewis said. "We are just a young, inexperienced team that lacks depth and that has hurt us all season, but I am proud of the effort these guys have given each week."

Why couldn’t the B.C.H.S. head-coaches’ Montgomery County post-game interview read something like, we’re just young, inexperienced team that lacks depth and that has hurt us all season. Even though, we had a 51 player roster, with a average weight of 181 lbs., including 15 seniors of which nine weighted 200-310lbs, 14 Jrs., 8 So., all 13 Fr. Weighing less than 150lbs each . We had 19 players returned from 2008 . 24 didn’t return ( 5 were seniors and 19 underclassmen, just forgot about them). The majority of this 51 man roster, has previous experience some as much as 6-7 years experience with Hendrix Park and the middle school football program. The majority of the head-coaches’ Show-Cased Players and starters were winning athletes in the Hendrix Park Youth Recreation Association. The rest of the roster, the head-coach telling some they would be starters but not so for whatever reasons, in reality they became sideline moral support awaiting that elusive day, when they have gained that magical talent and hopes it registers with the head-coach so they can become an active part of the team at game time. Wonder how many of the team will return in 2010, considering the Montgomery County pre-game speech the head coach gave to only the none starters, was not very encouraging. As with any team in any sport, the area of discipline is a major priority that must be stressed in order to have team success and Lewis said he has that at the top of his list . “One of the main objectives is to develop quality athletes through discipline, he said. “We must let these guys know that there are certain expectations and team guidelines that must be followed, no matter how talented one may be. We are looking for players that will work hard on and off the court and can set the proper example for others while taking advantage of the opportunities to contribute to the team. These guys have to understand that talent is not the only variable for making this team successful. Nice speech for a 12 year journeyman athletic-director, physical education teacher, head-coach with B.C.H.S. football record of won 27 lost 94. With 50% or less of team roster, less seniors returning year after year. But you are right, talent is not the only variable, some knowledgeable coaching certainly helps make a successful team. I don’t suppose theres any chance of making it a tri-county sweep with S.E.Bulloch and Effingham County H.S.’s head-coaches resigning. I believe it’s time for a new head-coach and athletic director at B.C.H.S. Someone with fresh ideas and a desire to get our team on track, instilling team pride and respect simultaneously. Respectfully Fred A. Covington
