
The Richmond Hill High School girls’ cross country team won the region title Thursday at the Region 3-AAA meet in Washington County. The RHHS boys’ team took second place. Both teams will now advance to the state meet.
Also at the region meet, Lady ‘Cat Tyler Carlson won the individual region title by being the first female to cross the finish line in 17:20. This is the second year in a row that both the girls’ team and Carlson have taken the top spot at the region meet.
Coach Jimmy Hires said he couldn’t be prouder of both his teams and noted that the girls have been region champions for the last four out of five years.
Other top individual finishes include Shanee McKee in fourth place and Janelle McKinney in fifth place. For the boys, Russell Lawless took fourth place with a time of 17:11, his best time yet.
The Lady Wildcat team that ran was Carlson, Mckee, McKinney, Makaila Offutt, who ran her best time of the year, Courtney Hicks, Taylor Carpenter and Taylor Ivester. The Wildcat team that competed was Justin Calkins, Josh Dunlevy, Brett Tuten, Charles Zhu, Jay Hires and Jeffery Fortier. Dunlevy and Hires ran their best time of the year.
Last week, in a regular season meet, Richmond Hill placed sixth out of 15 teams at Savannah Country Day. Carlson was first with a time of 20:30 and Lawless placed second with a time of 17:20. For Richmond Hill, Calkins was second, Dunlevy was third, Tuten was fourth, Hires was fifth and Fortier sixth.
Next up is the state meet, which takes place Nov. 7 in Carrollton.
