We have all heard it said that dynamite comes in small packages. This statement certainly rings true when describing Bryan County High athlete Tiffany Howard, co-winner of the May Bryan County Athlete of the Month award. Howard received her award at a presentation June 15 at BCHS.

Though Howard participates in several sports throughout the school year, she was recognized for her achievements in the sport of track where she has excelled in her first year and brought a smile to the face of Bryan County High track coach Blake Nesmith when talking about her performances and future hopes. Three region titles and placing at state were just two of several reasons that propelled Howard to be honored for her achievements in the month of May.

"Tiffany is successful for several reasons," Nesmith said. "First of all, she has the ability. Determination and guts can only get you so far, but somewhere along the way you are going to have to have some ability - something Tiffany has an abundance of. Her drive to win together with a work ethic that is above everyone else places her at the top in most everything she does. She is easy to coach, self-motivated, and really is a dream athlete. I wish they could all be like Tiffany."

This season was Howard’s first attempt at the sport of track, and she quickly found her niche. She competed in several events throughout the season and won several Region 3A awards while breaking some school records at the state meet.

Howard competed in the 400 meter run, 800 meter run, 3200 meter run, triple jump and was a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. At the region meet, she was part of the first place 4x400 relay team, took first place in the 3200 meter run, first place in the 800 meter run, and second place on the 4x100 relay team. At the state meet she broke a school record in the 800 meter run and 3200 meter run as well as in the 4x400 meter relay team. Another season highlight was being deemed High Point Winner at the Redskin Relays.

"I just like competing and running against others that are better than me," Howard said. "I want to line up against the best because it is no fun beating someone you know you can beat. I like being pushed to do my best."

On hand to see her youngest daughter accept this award was mother Christie Howard, who shed some insight on the success that seems to follow Tiffany in whatever sport she participates in.

"Tiffany is extremely self-motivated and wants to do the best she can every time," Christie Howard said. "She has the will to win and to do her best, so she really pushes herself. I think that is a big part of why she is successful. If she has given her all and played her best and happens to lose, then she can accept the fact that she lost. She is not a sore loser."

This is Howard’s second AoM award as she was honored by the Bryan County News in September for her softball achievements –an amazing accomplishment for a mere freshman – and a certain sign of things to come for Tiffany Howard in the world of BCHS sports over the next three years. Howard is also a star basketball player and top cross country runner.
