The 2009 Richmond Hill High School golf team had their last match on April 21, which was the Region 3-AAA tournament in Waynesboro. The Wildcats finished fifth out of seven teams with a score of 391.
West Laurens took the region title with a score of 315, followed by Burke, Thomson, Baldwin, RHHS, Liberty and WACO.
Wildcat golf coach Alex Gray said his team performed well but the youth and inexperience factor prohibited them from placing closer to the top.
No. 1 golfer Tyler Steptoe was the top scorer for the ‘Cats, as he has been all season. Gray said Steptoe’s putting was a bit off, which raised his score to an above-average 81. Steptoe, a senior, will most likely go on to play collegiate golf as he is already considering some offers.
"It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Tyler," Gray said. "I couldn’t ask for a better kid to represent this program. He’s been a leader on and off the court and has raised the bar for all of us. Although he’ll be gone, his influence will be felt next year. By simply observing his skills and the respect Tyler had for the game, our returning players will be better off next season."
Gray said seniors Ryan Tillman and Brittany Jarrell will be missed as well.
Jake Mullins shot a 93 at the region tourney while Tillman shot a 106. Brian Shonka and Parker Daniels each shot a 111, Zach Smith 112 and Brittany Jarrell 126.
"Jake Mullins played well and will be strong returner," Gray said. "Shonka will be as well if works on his game. Zach, Parker and Jay Hires have been working hard; they just need to find their swings. The work they put into the offseason may tell the tale of how we’ll do next season."
