The Richmond Hill High School golf team defeated region foe Liberty County last week. This was the last regular match of the season, with the Region 3-AAA tournament coming up on April 21 in Waynesboro.
Liberty’s No. 1 golfer Ben Floyd upset RHHS No. 1 Tyler Steptoe by one point in a 37-38 showdown, but the Wildcat roster came up with the overall victory in the April 8 match at Sterling Links.
"Hats off to Floyd because Steptoe played a great game," RHHS Coach Alex Gray said. "Tyler continues to show the maturity and focus of a champion and sets a good example for his teammates. He is being looked at by Shorter College in Rome for a potential golf scholarship."
Other top RHHS players in the Liberty meet included Jake Mullins, Brian Shonka and Jay Hires. Gray said Shonka, who is in his first year of golf, has worked hard "and it’s starting to pay off." He said Hires, who shot under 50 for the first time, is showing much improvement as well.
"We have a lot of youth on this team, and they’re starting to come together," Gray said. "I look for them to contribute at the region tournament."
Competing at the region tourney will be Steptoe, Hires, Shonka, Mullins, Ryan Tillman, Zach Smith, Parker Daniels and Brittany Jarrell. Former No. 2 golfer Andrew Shoft recently parted ways with the team.
BCHS Note: Redskin golf has been faced with a string of cancellations. Next up for the Redskin golfers is the Region 3-A tournaments. The boys play April 21 in Metter while the girls play the following day in Savannah’s Bacon Park.
